drinks in a so-called skimpy bar.
The Super Pit, an open mine, is in the center of the mining business in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. It is huge: 3.5 km long, 1.6 km wide and 620 m deep! The operation to find gold runs 24/7 and we had the opportunity to see a glimpse of it during our Super Pit tour. During our drive through the mine, Colin, a miner who volunteers as a guide, told us some interesting facts about the operation, including:
- it takes a driver of a haul truck 45 minutes to make a round trip, i.e. from the bottom of the mine to the top and back
- one tyre costs approx. 30.000 AUD (22.000 EUR). Yes, one tyre only! And there are six per truck...
- a truck can haul several hundreds of tons of rocks, etc.
- about fifty percent of the trucker driver is female
We visited the Super Pit lookout point twice to ensure we have the best pictures of this amazing site. There was no opportunity to take a picture of me standing next to haul truck. I already have such a picture - taken late nineties at the Komatsu plant in Peoria, Illinois, US, when I was working there on an Accenture project -, but it would have been nice to have another one. Fortunately, the Super Pit pictures are worthwhile too. Anyways, bye for now!

Hi Paul and Lutske,
yes, this is a great site. I have been standing at the visitor point and visited the offices of the mine (for business), but never went down the pit. They use about a 1000 tons/year of activated carbon to recover the gold.Of coarse also had a beer in one of the pubs (with my friend Brett) before heading back to Perth. You really see all the sites down in Western Australia. Good luck with the rest of the trip.

Super interesting! Think Okar has also a pic of himself next to one of those mega trucks in a mine in South-America. Will check if I can find his :-) And he wants to pack his suitcases and come and look for gold there in Kalgoorlie haha.
Bytheway, the map says Beaconsfield , Canada??? BYE x
